About •phoenix•
My creative background is a diverse one. I attended New York University’s Tisch School for Film, Television and Radio and worked for 12 years in the film industry. I got my start working in independent documentaries with acclaimed directors like George Stoney, and Judith Helfand. I spent 10 years in advertising post-production as a Graphics Specialist (Adobe After Effects in particular) and Department Head, Flame Artist and Editor with noted post houses Red Car Editorial and Greene & Grand. My client reel includes prominent spots for the X-Games, Sony, Aflac, AT&T, Sprint, IBM, 1-800 Flowers, Victoria's Secret, Celestial Seasonings, and many others. I've also edited a few independent features including the movie David Searching starring Anthony Rapp and Camryn Manheim. Honors include the 1998 AICP Spec Production Award.
Currently I am making a career change as a freelancer, offering my skills in graphic work, writing and photography. All of these skills have been lifelong passions of mine, and it's been a joy getting to use these skills in conjunction with my work once more. My latest writing work can be found in the online publication Black Purl Magazine. Examples of my photography can be found throughout the site including the award winning "Trundle at Rockwood." I've also uploaded a few examples of my design and photo-retouching work.
After returning to my hometown I also discovered knitting, crochet and fiber arts. While I continue to explore and learn these crafts I’ve become particularly interested in designing the types of products I would like to use and wear. My favorites are small one and two-skein projects, working with recycled materials, and mathematically-oriented designs. My progress has been somewhat slowed by the fact that I am certainly a crafter who enjoys the process more than I need hold the end product. I'm self-taught in both knitting and crochet, so I've been honing my design skills and learning the ropes by paying my dues as a test and sample knitter and crocheter for hire.
I also volunteer as editor for This Week in Ravelry, the weekly newsletter that helps the ever-growing Ravelry community (at last count over 150,000 strong!) stay current with it's many changes and developments.
I serve as president on the Board of Directors for the Pieces of a Dream dance troupe.
Last but not least, I'm a semi-regular blogger and pop-culture and music junkie with a dubiously impressive reservoir of trivia and facts of questionable usefulness at my fingertips and a collection of blogs to prove it. I've also been threatening to do a podcast - so keep your ears peeled and an eye out!
I’m available for freelance work in the above fields, as well as test and sample work.
